Pilks fall to late defeat against Thatto Heath

Pilkington Recs were left to wonder what could have been, after letting a 10-0 lead slip against Thatto Heath Crusaders at Ruskin Drive.

The home team took the lead after just under 15 minutes. A couple of penalties got Pilks up the pitch, and they managed to make the field position count. Jon Key powered over just by the posts to score. Kyran Knapper kicked the conversion to open up a six-point lead.

Pilks then found themselves a man up, after Thatto had a man sent to the sin bin following a late hit.

The hosts were knocking on the door, and had a try disallowed soon after for a forward pass.

But soon after, they did make their man advantage count. Pilks spread the ball well to the wing, and Jake Hodson was able to score in the corner. Knapper was off-target this time with the conversion attempt.

Thatto were able to drag themselves back into the contest just four minutes into the second half. Their forward came onto a short ball and used his strength to get over. The conversion was missed.

Pilks then had a chance to extend their lead further, with Knapper choosing to take the two points from a penalty. He put the kick wide, and as Thatto broke away, Ian Stanley was sent to the sin bin for holding their man down and stopping a quick play-the-ball.

They made that count straight away. In almost a carbon copy to the try they had already scored, Thatto's forward was again able to power over for his second try. The conversion was on target this time to level the game.

With the clock winding down, Pilks went to win it, but Tom Connick was off balance when going for his drop-goal attempt, and slipped it wide of the posts.

The resulting set allowed Thatto to break down the left-hand side and go over for the winning try.

A tense final few minutes ensured, but Thatto would hold on to the win, and subsequently, hold on to top spot in NCL League B.
