Recs reach Second Round for the third consecutive year

Pilkington Recs overcame a tough challenge to beat the Wallsend Eagles in Newcastle on Saturday.
Jake Hodgson ran in four tries for the visitors as well as tries for Luke Riley and Jono Peers among eight tries for Pilks. Tyler Walton replied for the hosts, who gave as good as they got to their higher ranked opposition.
The Red, Amber and Black started the game well and eventually took the lead through Riley as he was bundled over the tryline by opposition defenders. Danny Lynch nailed the conversion for an early lead for the Pilks.
Just four minutes later, Pilks got their second after Peers bulldozed his way through the defence and touched down. Lynch hit the conversion again for an early 12 point advantage.
Hodgson then got two tries in quick succession just before the break. Both coming as a result of brilliant set up play, their speed was proving too much for the Eagles. Lynch scored one of the conversions and missed the other one, but it meant Pilks went into the half time break with a 22 point advantage over their North East counterparts.
The second half was a little more scrappy, with mistakes creeping in to both sides games, but it was Pilks who got on the board first in the second half to effectively end the cup tie. Hodgson grabbing his hatrick in the corner with a fabulous finish that few in the Super League would be proud of, Lynch was again off target with the conversion attempt, but a 26 point lead with 25 minutes to go was good cause for optimism in the red, amber and black camp.
It was soon a 30 point lead as the forward was able to power through a Wallsend defence that was tiring after a big effort from them. Lynch was off target, but Pilks were still in a very commanding position.
Wallsend then got the consolation that their efforts deserved after Walton showed good feet to evade the defender and get the ball down. Fullback Scott Rendles nailed the conversion from out wide to get the Eagles onto the scoreboard.
But any optimism in the Wallsend camp was soon extinguished as Hodgson ran in for his fourth try of the match. Lynch was back on target with the conversion and Pilks extended their lead back up to 30.
Pilks were starting to run away with it and it was starting to show as they scored yet another run in try. Lynch was able to hit the conversion again to complete the scoring for Pilks in the game.
Considering it was their first game in 2018, they can be proud of their efforts, but they do still have some things to work on before the start of the season in March. The draw for the next round of the Challenge Cup is on Wednesday in the meantime.
