Pilkington Recs A beat Westhoughton Lions 34-8 to advance in the NWML Trophy

Pilkington Recs A won their first competitive match of the year, as they beat Westhoughton Lions 34-8 at Ruskin Drive.

It wasn't the best of starts for the hosts, as they went behind after 14 minutes. However, the conversion was missed.

That didn't last long though as Phil Riley managed to get through. Rob Marsh converted to edge Pilks in front 6-4.

The Lions took the lead again after 26 minutes, but Pilks hit back just before half time as Ryan Stevens managed to get over from dummy half. Marsh converted once again and then added a penalty with the final kick of the half to make it a six point advantage.

The second half belonged to Pilks as they scored four second half tries to assert their dominance. The first was scored by youngster Frazer Walsh-Dennett, who put in an impressive second half stint. Marsh was off target with the conversion.

The next try came from Mikey Houghton, another player who came on late in the game. He managed to step his way through the defence and score. Marsh was back on target to take Pilks over the 20-point mark.

Riley completed a man-of-the-match performance by scoring his second try with less than ten minutes to go, as gaps were starting to open up in the Westhoughton defence. Marsh was off target again, with the wind pulling his conversion away from the posts.

Marsh would have the final word as got a try to add to his kicks. He then converted his own try to leave his personal haul into double figures.

It secured safe passage for Pilks into the next round of the cup. Our next opponents will be announced in due course.

Attention now turns to the start of the league season. We open against Folly Lane at Ruskin Drive on Saturday, kick off is at 2.30pm.
