Pilks return to the top of NCL Division One

Pilkington Recs returned to the top of NCL Division One after a stunning 26-10 win against Featherstone Lions at Ruskin Drive on Saturday.
Pilks made two changes coming into the game as Tom Connick came back in for Greg Smith and Tez Riley replaced Xander Kean on the bench.
The hosts were also dealt an early blow as Kyran Knapper dislocated his shoulder in the warm up. He would be replaced by Owain Abel, who only returned from Jamaica this week.
Despite a fast start from the visitors, it was Pilks who took the lead early on Andy Morris crashed over after six minutes. Abel scored the conversion to make it a six point advantage.
It was a tight first half, with the pendulum often swinging one way then the other. Pilks knew this, and took the two points when they got the chance as Abel scored a penalty after a high shot.
However, just two minutes later the Lions were able to get on the scoresheet after they capitalised from a short kick off. It was converted, meaning they trailed by just two points.
That deficit was soon turned around by the Lions as they took advantage of a defensive lapse by Pilks to get in and score. This effort went unconverted, meaning it was a two point lead for Featherstone.
It stayed this way until half time, and the battle continued in very similar circumstances, both sides were making heavy metres up the middle.
The next try was crucial, and it fell to Pilks as Ryan Hilliard broke free and put Abel through to score almost 15 minutes into the second half. Abel then converted to put Pilks back in front by four points.
It was the start of a purple patch for Pilks, and they got another try just five minutes later as Alex McClurg got over from dummy half. Abel converted to bring the hosts' lead into double figures.
Another five minutes passed and Pilks moved to kill the game and grabbed another try as Jamie Smith dove over from short range. Abel kept up his perfect record to make it a 16 point lead with the clock winding down.
The game then just wound down and Pilks were able to see out a huge victory in the context of the season.
Pilks now have a week off before they return to action and travel to Milford on August 3rd.
