Tributes have been pouring in following the passing of Pilks Recs and Swinton legend Kevin Whittle, aged 84.
A rumbustious and uncompromising second-rower, he began his rugby odyssey with Prescot BI rugby union, before switching to Pilks Recs where he won all the amateur code’s major honours, including town, county and international recognition.
He signed for Swinton in the late 1960s and helped the Lions to promotion in the 1974-75 season, but after a serious arm injury, he returned to his first love, at City Road as player-coach and helped Pilks to 3 BARLA Challenge Cup final victories [1979 1980 1982].
He was a vital general factotum at City Road behind the scenes and adopted several key roles with great effectiveness.
Together with his wife, Sheila, he was also the Bar Manager at Saints Restaurant and Function rooms for 13 years. Our condolences are extended to his family at this sad time.
