Pilkington Recs A Season Review: A season of promise

It was a season of transition, but a learning curve for our NWML side

The Pilklington Recs A side came into the season having taken a voluntary relegation, as part of the new setup of the North West Mens League, feeling at the time as though the travel would not be as harsh on the squad.
Their first game was at Westhoughton Lions on a horrible day in March, Pilks struggled in the conditions and went down 38-0.
They then had three home games in a row, and won them all against Manchester Rangers, Leigh Miners Rangers and Wigan St Judes, though the Manchester one was later annulled after they pulled out of the league.
Despite their strong home form, they couldn't quite carry it onto the road. They lost their next three on the road against Hindpool Tigers, Chorley Panthers and Bury Broncos, though this was a walkover.
Their next match at home didn't provide much respite, as they hosted promotion chasing Langworthy Reds, and lost 32-10.
Next up saw them pick up their first away point of the season as they shared the spoils with Wigan St Pats A in a thrilling 30-30 draw. But they couldn't take that into their next match on the road as they were well beaten at Leigh Miners.
However, a new crop of U18s were starting to find their feet with the second team and it came together as they grabbed their first away win at Wigan St Judes. They backed it up with a win over St Pats at Ruskin Drive, their third in a row.
But that momentum was stopped in its tracks by the summer break, which saw them out of action for six weeks.
They pushed the Broncos close, but then two of their next three games finished as walkovers, in between an impressive 84-14 win over a depleted Tigers side.
Though results were mixed in the season, there is a side with a mixture of youth and experience that could really go far in the future.
Coming into the league next season will be champions of Division Three Wigan Spring View and Folly Lane, who were relegated from Division One.
As always, we want to thank our sponsors for their support this season.
