Newbies v Thatto Heath Crusaders
Pilks brought down the curtain on a successful season in real style as they shut down free-scoring cross-town rivals in a Battle Royale that will go down in the records as a classic for the ages.
This derby fixture started franticly with both sides trading tries blow for blow and seemingly scoring at will. With a word in their ear from Coach Cole part way through this epic encounter the Recs upped their defensive effort and held out their rivals for two sets in the first half taking a deserved lead. Unbeaten at home this season – this inspired defensive effort held firm for the remainder of the game, giving the red, amber and black a triumphant victory at Fortress Ruskin.
Once again, Tommy showed his class, playing like a man possessed - topping both tackling and try scoring charts but being assisted all over the park by his teammates who shared out tries and defensive duties equally.
Jackson marshalled the troops around the park, his creative genius combined with his running on to the ball at pace was too much to handle for Thatto Heath.
Ruby was dominant as usual, her trademark left hand fend keeping would be tacklers at bay as she advanced up the field with ease.
Theo B-M rampaged time and time again up the middle of the pitch, making yards and breaking the oppositions’ tackles with every carry of the ball. Opposition coaches were suitably impressed by his display naming him their player of the match.
Sam C showed great ability with a superb offload out of the tackle putting Tommy in to score. This lovely piece of skill rightly applauded by the crowd.
Reuben played with all his might, never giving up, chasing down attackers and was a real thorn in the Crusaders side.
Freddie showed great sportsmanship and volunteered to strengthen the opposition ranks. This was immediately regretted by the Pilks support as he gave a scintillating solo performance against his usual team mates, scoring a brilliant hat trick and rightly being named Man of the Match by Coaches Cole and Moores - well done Freddie.
A remarkable first season for the boys and girls – bring on next year!
