Pilkington Recs mounted a stunning late fightback to claim their first away win of the season at Stanningley.
Pilks trailed 18-6 heading into the final 10 minutes at the Arthur Miller Stadium, but scored three tries to earn just their second win of the season.
It was a team that boasted several changes from the side that was beaten by Oldham St Anne's a fortnight ago. Ben O’Connell, Jack Tinsley, Aaron Lynch and Luke Riley all came out of the side. Returning were Aidyn Jones, Tyler Duberry and Lewis Griffiths.
Before the match got underway, there was a beautifully observed minutes silence for rugby league great John Kear, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 71.
It was a real battle in the first half, with defences firmly on top. But it was the hosts who broke the deadlock after half an hour to lead by six at the break.
Pilks responded just a few minutes into the second half. They forced a repeat set close to the Stanningley line, and Scott Simmons went over from close range for his first try of the season. Tom Connick added the conversion to level the scores.
The second half followed a similar pattern, but two Stanningley tries in five minutes seemed to pull them clear at 18-6.
But back came Pilks. Aidyn Jones took in a flat pass and stepped inside to score. Connick converted to bring Pilks back within a converted try.
Barely three minutes later, Connick kicked to the corner and Tyler Duberry got there first to close the gap further. Connick couldn't convert to level the scores.
But it wouldn't matter, as in the final minute, Jones got clear again and went over to cue wild celebrations on the Pilks bench. Connick added the conversion.
They still had to defend one more set as Stanningley got the short kick off, but held firm to pick up a priceless victory.
That victory lifts Pilks off the bottom of the Division One table. They travel to top of the table Kells next week.
