Pilkington Recs U7's turned up at Ashton on a perfect day for rugby, warm and on a nice soft pitch. This was the first time Pilks fielded a full compliment of nine players and even in the warm up looked like a team that is really coming together, focused, moving up in a line and as a team.
Ashton came out all guns blazing giving Pilks a lesson on fast play of the ball and speed of play, all that being said Pilks in previous weeks would have been caught short but not this week they were ready and although couldn't keep Ashton out, made them work for every try with great focus and great defence.
Pilks kept this defence and focus all through the game and made sure Ashton worked for every point and even keeping them down to a single try in the second third. Pilks also had their fair share of chances attacking Ashton's line on several occasions but could only breach it once with a great solo effort by Jake Abel.
Ryan Halsall was honorary captain this week and played a captains game tackling well and running straight and hard, Jake Abel got player of the match not only for his try but for his usual 100% effort in attack and defence he gives every week, Jack Thompson Smith was awarded a well deserved parents choice for his great go forward showing the sorts of runs he has started to do in training which saw him take the cup home this week. Logan King took home coaches choice on his debut proving there is a lot more to come from this player.
Zak Mulcahy although didn't get over the try line this week proved what a valuable and tough player he is tackling well and getting up even after some hard knocks. Liam Coughlin proved just because he is a big lad he is not just a battering ram and showed his side step that never went unnoticed with Ashton's coach commenting on how well he stepped. Nathan Flynn, Harry Thompson and Codey Massam all played well tackling strong and and running well with all three doing their fare share of work at acting half back.
The team spirit in this team grow's every week, along with the skill level, but more than anything the reason me and the coaches are so proud of this group of players is their sportsmanship, never giving up and never complaining.
Well done keep it up
