U9s v West Bank
1st quarter 3-1
The game started in typical fashion with big strong drives up the field from Logan and Ben before an inside drop off pass from Lewis to Logan sends logan flying in for the first try of the game. 1-0
Pilks then backed up the early score with some big tackles keep West Bank out for the next set.
The next five minutes were a calamity of dropped balls, firstly a first tackle knock on from Ben shortly followed by a West Bank knock on and then one from Dylan Finney.
Pilks stuck together and pulled out some bruising group tackles but couldn’t quite keep their try line in tact as West Bank number 7 squeezed in to make it 1-1
Pilks took no time to get back up the field and another well set up play with a few lads running some great lines and a drop off to Ben who hit the line at pace regained the lead at 2-1
Pilks were keen to keep the lead and were quick off the line in defence forcing another first tackle knock on from West bank.
It was the backs turn to do a bit of work, some good fast and solid runs upfield from Zak and then Rhys made plenty of yards. Two more strong runs with some fierce hand offs from Aidan then Logan down the line put Pilks 3-1 up through Logan’s second try of the day
2nd quarter 3-3
Not wanting to let the bears back into the game recs started with a bang and forced West Bank into touch on the first tackle of the quarter.
Another strong drive from Ben set the platform for Rhys and Lewis to provide some quick distribution of the ball but Pilks struggled to make the yards as the West Bank defensive line stood strong.
Pilks turn to defend again and a superb tackle from Rhys dragged the West Bank player into touch but the referee wasn’t convinced so it played on, the very next tackle Aidan put it out of doubt by dragging them into touch again.
Ben once again tried to set a platform for the recs but a spilled ball handed possession back to the bears.
Dylan Greenall was involved in every tackle as West Bank attacked the pilks line but eventually West Bank number 6 broke the line and sprinted in to close the gap to 3-2.
Pilks brought the ball out through Ellis but the ball came loose again and another first tackle knock on handed possession back yet again, pilks just couldn’t seem to keep hold of the ball in a mistake ridden match.
West Bank were looking dangerous and started to put the ball through the hands with some good off loading but Aiden tracked perfectly and again dragged the ball carrier into touch.
Ellis again brings the ball out with Passion but gets a bit of unwanted attention in the tackle and got penalised for kicking out, the Widnes side brought the ball back and Ellis was the first man there with a great hit up.
West Bank piled on the pressure and found a way over in the corner to tie the game up at 3-3
Pilks tried to get the ball out but again they met some energetic defence, Lewis tried his usual looping pass out to Dylan Greenall but it seemed like a narrow pitch and there was just no room for those moves to work this week, the pressure showed again with another knock on trying to find a way through.
The last set of the half Aidan continued to show his tracking skills as he again dragged the West Bank player into touch.
3rd quarter 5-4
West Bank came out firing again in the second half but some quality tackles from Logan, Zak and Ethan held strong in defence, a West Bank player came flying through with his elbows high taking Ethan off his feet but he shuck it off and continued with the strong defence to force a bears knock on.
Again recs couldn’t capitalise on the errors and handed the ball back with a dropped ball again on the first tackle, heads then dropped and some poor line defence allowed a walk in try and the bears took the lead for the first time 4-3
Pilks again sent in the big boys and some rapid ball distribution from Rhys had the recs flying down field so much so the Alan came flying down the touch line at one point trying to keep up with play, Rhys threw a perfectly timed pass an Logan hit it at full pace to speed in and tie it back up at 4-4
Attention turned back to defence and Ethan, Rhys and Josh stood strong before a booming tackle from Logan threw the attacker into touch.
Trys were proving hard to come by and simple drives wasn’t getting anyone over the line, Logan got a great offload out to Aidan who made good yards along with Ellis and Dylan Greenall also pushing strong, at the line Lewis tried a lovely little tap on to Aidan but there simply wasn’t room to take it in.
The next set West Bank quickly spotted pilks leaving gaps in the line, hit one and sprinted away to regain the lead at 5-4.
West Bank wasn’t going to let the lead go easily and early drives from Ben had every player on the pitch on him. They then attacked pilks line on a new level and it took a final inch tackle into touch to save a try in the corner.
4th quarter 0-0
Pilks attacked first in the final quarter and with such a tight score line it was tense, Aidan copped a high tackle early in and needed to come off, next attempt of a tackle Widnes ripped the ball giving pilks a good attacking position but the pressure was starting to show and Dylan Finney lost the ball cold on the way in.
Pilks showed some grit with some really good on line defence from all on the field to keep West Bank out and regain the ball on half way. Pilks received an early penalty when a bears player was a tad keen with his elbows, much to the dislike of the coach but the ref brilliantly put pain to any complaints and controlled the game amazingly.
Pilks looked tired and the drives that were making 20 yards before was now only making 5, west banks intensity lifted as Pilks faded away and only for some big one on one tackles from Lewis they could have scored again.
The game ended with some really scrappy rugby, a bears penalty for a high tackle, a ripped ball and yet another knock on, the final set of the game Pilks had ball in hand and a final opportunity to take a draw out of the game, solid drives from Dylan and Logan got it to the line, another drive from Logan was held up over the line on the 3rd, Ben got over but was pushed back on the 4th, Fifth tackle and Logan threw an offload out of the tackle to Ethan but he couldn’t quite take it in. The game was over and it wasn’t to be for Pilks to take anything from this game that was littered with errors across the field but gave plenty of opportunity’s for improvement in training next week.
Man of the match went to Ben Looker, Ben had another Great game this week he was always there to take the ball up and made some fantastic meters for his team. I push Ben as I know what he can be capable of and when he gives his all he puts in a fantastic attack for his team. Well done your improving every week. Brilliant game!
Man of the match went to Dylan Greenall, this lad again this week put in a fantastic performance in defence, for his size you would think he would step out the way when a forward is running at him but no he puts his body on the line and even got his self hurt a couple of times but he made sure he stopped that try! West Bank was going over for a certain try and he made a cracking try saver on his line! Dylan makes some awesome meters for his team, he isn’t a forward but can certainly make the meters of one! Fantastic game Dylan!
Parents choice, this lad could of walked away with every trophy this week he was outstanding and put in a full 40 minutes game time. He made awesome meters for his team, no matter what was threw at him he shrugged it off and powered his way up the field! He really did give everything he had this week and went over for a cracking hat trick. Your really did step up for your team this week Logan and I could of give you all the trophies it was your best performance to date and our cheeky little forward is coming back out of his shell and it’s showing. Same again this week fantastic game!
Players player was Aidan Houghton, Aidan had another Great game this week putting in some big shots and taking lads into touch. Aidan was fantastic in chasing players down this week and forcing them into touch getting us the ball back. Aidan made great meters and he backed his team mates up waiting for the offload, was so close to going over West Bank just held strong. Aidan got hurt and had to come off before the end but you could see him itching to get back on! Brilliant game Aidan well done!
Tackler of the Game was Ellis Carsley, Ellis put in a fantastic shift in the middle and made some brilliant tackles! Ellis dropped a couple of balls this week and you seen his head go down but I told him it doesn’t matter be the first up in defence and as always he didn’t let his team down he was up there first man making cracking tackles, that’s what we want. Never get upset for making a mistake, that’s how we learn and it’s learning from it that make us better players. Proud of you Ellis you stood strong and didn’t give up you put In a fantastic performance well done!
Tackler of the game was Lewis Taylor, Lewis put in some awesome defence this week. His one on ones was fantastic this week and stopped a couple of certain tries in the corner. One tackle in particular that stood out was when his team mates couldn’t manage to take a player down so he came across the pitch, followed the player an took him one on one down the wing stopping the try! He really did put his body on the line in defence this week for his team and his defence this week was the old Lewis and it was brilliant to see! Well done Lewis fantastic performance!
